The baseline automatic. It struggles with damage and overheating and its mods do not rescue it — move to another weapon as soon as you unlock one.

Recommended Engine Rifle build
If you are stuck with it early, its saving grace is the high fire rate: Fortune (Goldburst) turns every shot into gold-scaled damage. Otherwise, swap it out the moment a better weapon drops.

Engine Rifle fire modes
Pick one primary and one secondary fire mode at the Workbench. Each weapon has three of each.
Primary fire
- Automatic Fire — Fast automatic fire.
- Burst Fire — Semi-automatic bursts.
- Gatling Fire — Fire rate ramps up the longer you shoot.
Secondary fire
- Engine Rev — High fire rate but builds Heat.
- Split Shot — Multiple shots in an unpredictable spread; builds Heat.
- Concentrated Shot — Semi-auto that knocks enemies back; builds Heat.
Engine Rifle Ancient Forge upgrades
Weapon-specific Forge mods that reshape how the Engine Rifle plays.
- Prolonged Revving — Shooting enemies reduces Heat.
- Greased Barrel — Increases damage the longer you fire without letting go of your Primary or Secondary.
- Insulated Barrel — Increases fire rate by up to 100% the higher your Heat is.
- Heat Converter — Deal up to 100% more damage the higher your Heat is.
- Binary Cooling — Heat no longer decreases over time after Overheating, but is cleared after 5 sec.
- Burst Cooling — Stops Heat from increasing for 5 sec. after Overheated is cleared.
- Large Capacity — Increases the max clip size and the Overheat threshold by 100%.
- Heat Expulsion — Explodes in a 15-meter radius once Overheated, dealing 1000% weapon damage.
